To apply for your benefits, the first step is either to contact them online, over the phone or by visiting a local office in person. If you choose to apply online, you will benefit from not having to wait for an appointment – you will be able to start the process immediately. This option, however, is only available if you are 18 or over, have worked and paid the appropriate taxes for the qualifying amount of time, have a qualifying disability and currently reside in either the United States or a territory.

Before applying, you will need to review the checklist, and then fill out the application with the appropriate information. Following that, you will then need to fill out the disability report to provide information regarding medical and work history. 

Once these are both completed, the “Authorization to Disclose Information to the Social Security Administration” will need to be somehow sent to a local office, no matter if mailed or taken in person.
